Maternity Model (Story)

Emma Parkes - Professional Photographer

I met up with Brooklyn in Barbados where she was on vacation with her husband for a couple of weeks. I recalled photographing her sometime in the past - not for maternity wear obviously, so it seemed like she had some experience with modelling. I'd brought the clothes we would be photographing with me in my suitcase, consisting of some nice beachwear and some cardigans. When I was briefed on the trip three months prior, I was told she was pregnant with one, and would be about six months in when I met up with her in Barbados. "Great" I thought - a nice big belly to work with. We'll get her in a bikini and snap some shots along the beach. However, the story got a bit more interesting when I received an update from my boss a couple of months later;
"She's got three now" he said bluntly
"Three what?"
"Babies"
"Triplets?" I said, a little perplexed.
"Yeah, they did another scan or something" he mumbled, evidently uninterested in the subject. That's all I got from him - no explanation. I kind of assumed there had been misinterpreting somewhere down the line, and I didn't think anything more of it until I met up with her for a coffee to discuss the shoot.
I had arrived early to set up my MacBook and open a note page to get down any details about the shoot I needed to know, and I was able to admire her as she walked in dressed in a long, tight, burgundy top with some skinny jeans and complete with a white leather jacket and handbag. As she walked towards me, the belly came into view, and I have to say - it was bigger than I expected. She walked over to me rather gracefully with one hand on top of it and one hand below, lifting one to return my subtle wave.

“Hey! Emma, right?” she said to me as I got up to shake her hand.

“Yeah, that’s me – I’m your photographer.”

“Great to meet you in person!” she said, lowering herself into the booth I was in.

“You look great by the way! You’re six months in, right?”

“Yep, three months left carting this around.” She said, giving it a little pat. She had to sit right at the back of the seat to fit into the table.

“Correct me if I’m wrong but, you’re carrying just one I believe?” I said, a little curious at how big she was.

“Well there’s actually three of them in there now, all squished together” she said. I still looked a little confused.

“Let’s get a drink and I’ll explain”

We walked up to the counter together as she began to explain the confusion.

“My husband Michael and I were trying for a child – not for very long actually, I got pregnant pretty quickly – and we were told at our first scan that the baby was getting on well. Of course, we didn’t know it at the time, but we found out later that I have a condition called ‘uterus didelphys’ which basically means that I have two wombs. So, when my husband and I felt like a little ‘you know what’ we were unaware that while one of my wombs had a nice healthy baby growing in it, the other womb was still empty, sitting there ripe to be fertilised. Thus, at our three-month scan, we found out about the second womb and that we actually had a set of twins in that one, totalling three foetuses.” She explained

“Wow that’s really quite unique!” I said, amazed at her tale.

“I know! The thing is, you would’ve thought it would be no different to a triplet pregnancy right? That’s what we thought, but it turns out that the womb with the original foetus in it will grow that baby like a singleton pregnancy, and then the second will grow two twin-sized babies, regardless of the space available. So, instead of growing three triplet-sized babies, I’m growing a full size baby and two twin-sized babies.”

“I’ve never heard of that before” I said in response. She retrieved some photos of her womb from her hand bag at this point, and passed them over to me. She’d had one of those fancy new imaging pictures done showing the babies' faces.

“Early signs suggest that baby number one's going to be quite a big baby!” she said to me, while pointing at a photo. “The doctor estimated he’s already around eight pounds!”

“And at just six months? Imagine how big he’ll be when he’s born!” I said.

“I know! It’s kind of worrying though. I don’t know if I can get much bigger!” she said as she heaved herself up and we went to get our drinks. She seems to be carrying the pregnancy well. She’d taken off her jacket, so I could see just how big her belly was, and it truly dominated her body. What was clearly once a trim waist now supported a huge womb packed with three large babies. I prepared myself for some serious stretchmarks with a belly so big, but I was pleasantly surprised.

We went back to her holiday house later that day so I could assess what I was working with, and I’ll admit – her pregnant body was very impressive. She poured me a glass of water before walking off into her bedroom to change into something lighter, so I sat with her husband in their modern sea-view apartment. She returned a moment later in a cute blush bra and panties and turned around in front of me, pointing out what little blemishes she had. Boy did that belly look huge now that it wasn’t being held back at all. How did she carry it with such ease? She didn’t have a single stretchmark on her belly, large as it was, with the only evidence of how much pressure her body was under being her poor distended belly button. She sat down next to her husband once we were done, her lap quickly taken over by her unborn children, and they smiled sweetly to each other as Michael’s hand made its way round her shoulder. That reminded me – bra size. Brooklyn was actually a surprisingly busty gal, even if some of it was on account of her pregnancy. The bikini’s I had brought with me were a C cup as I recall, but I was sure it wouldn’t matter if things were a little snug.

Sure enough, a couple of days after that, the shoot took place on the beach that we could see so wonderfully from their apartment. I had about five different combos lined up for her, all of which she wore like a champion, but the most notable of which being the leopard-skin bikini – my personal favourite. We walked around the bay picking out places to shoot for most of the day and then split ways leaving them to eat at a local restaurant. A girl in her condition must have been ravenous after all that work!

I received an email a couple of days ago from Brooklyn’s husband, Michael, telling me about the birth of their three boys. I was as amazed as he was to hear that all of the babies were born naturally between eight and ten pounds!
